All
Falcon's originally had the same engine number as the
number stamped on the passenger side shocker tower when they left the factory.
Early Falcon's till 1971 had a dual numbering system.
They had a V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number ) as well as a body prefix number
.
The V.I.N. number as stamped on the front edge of the passenger side shocker
tower, ( shocker tower and engine are the same remember ) and body prefix and
serial number as stamped on the passenger side front of the radiator support
panel, which corresponds to the number stamped on the I.D plate fitted to
drivers side, till Jan 1970 and the I.D. plate attached to the bulkhead in 1970
only.
From Jan. 1971 onwards, Ford went to the 3 way system. Body prefix and serial
number as appeared on the I.D. Tag was the same on the engine and shocker
tower.
Most body prefix
numbers of Australian produced cars go something like this;
JG34KA 44553
First letter 'J' stands for what country = Australia ,
Second letter 'G' stands for what assembly plant = Broadmeadows or Second
letter 'H' stands for what assembly plant = Brisbane,
Following two numbers '34' stands for what model of car = Fairmont sedan, as
can be seen in the 'JG' chart below,
Next letter 'K' stands for the year of production = 1970 and
Last letter 'A' stands for the month of production = November, as can be seen
in the production date code breaker chart also below.
The last five numbers are purely a serial number of the car to specifically
identify it.

All XRGT Falcons had a VIN number starting
"LD" with five numbers following starting with 5 and all ending in a
"C". For example;
LD 51234 C
The engine number was stamped on the front of the block behind the alternator.
XRGT's also had a body prefix and serial number stamped on the radiator support
panel, passenger side, as was stamped on the I.D. plate. For example;
JG33GH 12345
All XRGT Falcons had an engine code of " K " stamped on the I.D.
plate which stood for '289 - 4V'
All had " L " for transmission code for four speed manual transmission.
Most XRGT Falcons had " T " for paint code for "GT Gold"
but there were a few other codes stamped in this spot on some GT's, like;
K = Silver Grey Metallic
F 166 = Gallagher GT Silver
X = Ivy Green Metallic
F 131 = Avis White
Spec = Could be anything but this one was Silver

All XTGT Falcons had a VIN number
starting "GE" if it was produced with a four speed transmission and
"GF" if it were an auto with four numbers following starting with 1or

The engine number was stamped on the front of the block behind the alternator
in early examples and on the back of the block behind the intake manifold in
subsequent ones .
XTGT's also had a body prefix and serial number stamped on the radiator support
panel passenger side as was stamped on the I.D. plate. For example;
JG33HK 45655
All XTGT Falcons had an engine code of " W " stamped on the I.D.
